WITHDRAWING
JANUARY 13 – FEBRUARY 17, 1996

The Feldman Gallery will exhibit drawings by over thirty artists. The drawings, from 1950 – 1996, comprise a wide spectrum of techniques and materials which reflect the broad range of artists associated with the gallery.

Included in the exhibition is a drawing from 1950 by Andy Warhol as well as drawings related to his later print series; several drawings by Joseph Beuys, one consisting of chalk on a concrete hearth; and studies relating to earth and space by Panamerenko and Buckminster Fuller. Arakawa and Madeline Gins are repreented by a computer rendition of the Reversible Destiny House which refers to their permanent monumental walk-through installation which recently opened in Japan.

The gallery will also exhibit nature studies from the 1980’s by Hannah Wilke and several 1995 charcoal and ink drawings by Yayoi Kusama. Komar & Melamid are represented by two studies for their 1981 painting, I Saw Stalin Once When I was a Child. In addition, Ilya Kabakov will exhibit several new collages with Russian text. Leon Golub and Conrad Atkinson have made new, mixed media drawings with political intent. Recent works by Ida Applebroog make reference to her early vellum pieces. Eleanor Antin will exhibit large-scale "romantic fragments – ghosts of drawings passed through a series of media transformations."

Several of the artists represented use drawings as a preliminary stage for the creation of large-scale projects. Allan Wexler’s drawings refer to his recent installation as part of the Eastern State Penitentiary Project in Philadelphia. Mierle Ukeles drawings are related to her monumental Flow City Project installed at the Marine Transfer Station on the Hudson River.

The exhibition will include drawings of artists recently associated with the gallery. Jim Anderson, working with computer-generated imagery, will include a twelve-foot vertical drawing on vellum. Roxy Paine will exhibit ink drawings consisting of renditions of body parts reproduced in the popular press.

Artists included are Vincenzo Agnetti, Jim Anderson, Eleanor Antin, Ida Applebroog, Arakawa and Madeline Gins, Conrad Atkinson, Joseph Beuys, Brodsky & Utkin, Chris Burden, Nancy Chunn, Douglas Davis, Jud Fine, Terry Fox, Buckminster Fuller, Leon Golub, Helen and Newton Harrison, Margaret Harrison, Ilya Kababkov, Komar & Melamid, Piotr Kowalski, Yayoi Kusama, The Martinchiks, Roxy Paine, Panamernko, The Peppers, Tomas Ruller, Edwin Schlossberg, Todd Siler, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Andy Warhol, Clemens Weiss, Allan Wexler, and Hannah Wilke.

There will be a reception on Saturday January 13, from 6:00-8:00. Gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00-6:00. For more information and photographs contact Amanda Smith (212) 226-3232.
