IDA APPLEBROOG
JANUARY 12 FEBRUARY 9
Ida Applebroog will be exhibiting Modern Olympia at the Feldman Gallery from January 12 to February 11. This, the twelfth exhibition at the Feldman Gallery, includes paintings from 1997 to the present and represents a major shift of focus. Applebroog’s springboard for these works is Manet’s Olympia, which presented a new way of freeing women’s sexuality from shame. This subject matter, as depicted by women artists, is rare in art history. In this exhibition, Applebroog presents a counterpoint to our culture’s measure of youth and sexuality by introducing aging into the equation.
A full-scale monograph covering Applebroog’s entire career-to-date, Are You Bleeding Yet?, will be published in the spring of 2002 by La Maison Red and distributed by D.A.P./ Distributed Art Publishers. The book, edited by Benjamin Lignel, will include excerpts from more than thirty writers who have written about her work in the past.
In 1998, Ida Applebroog was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. Recent group exhibitions include The American Century at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Humor and Rage at the Fundació Caixa Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain, and a one-person exhibition at Galerie Nathalie Pariente in Paris, France. The Corcoran Gallery of Art, in conjunction with a one-person exhibition of Applebroog’s work, published a major catalogue of her work, Ida Applebroog: Nothing Personal, Paintings 1987-97, with essays by Terrie Sultan, Arthur Danto, and Dorothy Allison.
The opening of the exhibition will be on Saturday, January 12, from 6:00 8:00 PM. Gallery hours are Tuesday Saturday, 10:00 6:00, Monday by appointment. For information, contact Amy Bannon at (212) 226-3232 or amy@feldmangallery.com.
