IDA APPLEBROOG

LIVING

NOVEMBER 2 - DECEMBER 7, 1996

Ida Applebroog's tenth exhibition at the Feldman Gallery, entitled Living, includes a new series of White paintings and free standing canvases from her recurring Marginalia series.

The recent paintings of Applebroog contrast our attempt to impose domestic order against the chaos we find within ourselves, in families, and in the world. Large, white images and seemingly disconnected fragments are flanked by calendar strips. But instead of homey Martha Stewartisms -- "Prepare for paella party" or "Prune tea roses" -- Applebroog's bizarre notations border on the schizoid -- "Plan cure for ugliness" or "Bake fartlets."

In addition to these White paintings, Applebroog presents Marginalia. Painted in blood red, these panels convey stark moments of disquieting interactions between individuals.

In Applebroog's work, continuing attempts at re-establishing lost family traditions and relationships -- the rituals of holidays, crisp linens, apple pie -- seem doomed to break down into fragments and dissociations.

Ida Applebroog received a Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement from the College Art Association in 1995. Major recent group exhibitions include Ars 95 Helsinki at the Museum of Contemporary Art/Finnish National Gallery in Helsinki, Finland and 25 Americans: Painting in the 90's at the Milwaukee Art Museum.

The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. will mount a ten-year survey of Applebroog's work in the Spring of 1998.

Gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Mondays by appointment. There will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, November 2 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. For more information, please contact Emily Graham at (212) 226-3232.
