FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 25, 1976
CHRIS BURDEN
Relics
May 1-June 5, 1976
A conceptual artist, living in California, Chris Burden has achieved international attention for his investigations of psychological and social experience through the execution of body-oriented performance pieces. Basic to much of the work presented is the idea of risk and learning directly through the activity of creation.
Chris Burden will exhibit eight relics of the early 1970s performances. These include Trans-Fixed, Dreamy Nights, White Light/ White Heat, I Became a Secret Hippy, and Prelude to 220, or 110.
As Anne Ayres says in the 1988 book, Chris Burden: A Twenty Year Study, "Chris Burden's relics are not to be considered sculpture or assemblage in a traditional fine arts sense; they are not, that is, intended as objects of esthetic delectation. Rather, they constitute the critical artifacts that remain after the conclusion of his performance pieces and are intended to point to these social actions."
