Peggy Jarrell Kaplan
Portraits Celebrating BAM's Next Wave Festival: 1983-92

December 5 – 23

For more than a decade, Peggy Jarrell Kaplan has been taking portraits of choreographers and other performing artists in the contemporary international arts community. Many of these experimental artists have been associated with the Next Wave Festival which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this fall at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

The artist was commissioned as the portrait photographer for the Next Wave Festival's journals for the 1984 and 1985 seasons which included performances of Einstein on the Beach, the Pina Bausch Wuppertal Dance Theatre, the Mark Morris Dance Group, Secret Pastures by Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane, Michael Moschen, Cecil Taylor, Steve Reich, and the World Saxophone Quartet.

Kaplan continued to photograph performing and visual artists associated with the Next Wave Festival including the cast of The Mahabharata directed by Peter Brook and Anne Teresa de Keersmaker's dance company. Artists in the festival's current 1992 season such as the companies of David Rousseve and Saburo Teshigawara will be represented in this exhibition.

The artist has had exhibitions in conjunction with dance and theatre festivals in Holland, France, Scotland, Austria, Sweden and Canada. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Kaplan's Portraits of Choreographers is published by editions Bouge (Paris) and Ronald Feldman Fine Arts and distributed by the University of New Mexico Press.

There will be a reception for the artist on December 5 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 10 – 6 , Mondays by appointment. For more information, please contact Susan Yung at (212)226-3232.
