MARK KOSTABI

September 6 – October 11
Gallery Hours: Tues – Sat, 10-6

"LIVE AND EARN"

Mark Kostabi opens the fall season on Saturday, September 6th, with an exhibition of new paintings and sculpture. Inhabited by faceless, androgynous figures, Kostabi's paintings reveal the conflicts and loneliness of contemporary life. The exhibition includes two series of paintings: "Interiors" and "Drop Clothes".

In the "Interiors" series, which is based on compositions by well-known painters, Kostabi's anonymous characters are surrounded by familiar objects, and exist in a safe, isolated universe. They blend into their environment, experiencing a kind of exaggerated alienation: they are tourists in their own homes.

The "Drop Cloth" series is different both in content and style from "Interiors". In these works, which are also populated by faceless figures, Kostabi uses fabrics, drop cloths and found paintings. Here, however, the figures are invaders who visit/react to/steal from other people and other worlds.

The artist's first bronze and plaster sculptures are also on view. In these works, the estranged figures step out of the paintings and confront the viewer in a disarming manner.

Mark Kostabi, who is also known for his aphorisms ("Say less and say yes"; "paintings are doorways into collectors' homes"), has had over twenty solo exhibitions in the United States, Australia, Germany and Japan. This is his first one-person show at Ronald Feldman Fine Arts.

The public is invited to a reception for the artist, Saturday, September 6th from 5 to 7 PM. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM, Mondays by appointment only.
