DRAWINGS AND MODELS OF COMPLETED AND PROPOSED PROJECTS

Opens January 5, 1980

The Feldman Gallery will exhibit models and drawings of both completed and proposed projects by SITE, an architecture and environmental art organization in New York City. This show coincides with the "Building for Best Products" exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art which includes photo-documentation of buildings completed by SITE for the Best Products Company. The exhibition at MOMA opened on December 12th and will run through February.

The SITE Group is composed of architects, artists, and technicians, chartered in 1970 for the purpose of exploring new ideas for architecture and public spaces. The projects of SITE break down the traditional distinctions between art and buildings as separate entities. With this respect, architecture is treated as the "subject matter" (or raw material) for an art idea, rather than the conventional objective of a design process. By accepting the terms of commonplace architectural typologies and paradigms – each conditioned by habitual use and reflex identification – SITE uses the building itself as a means of responding to social, psychological, and environmental influences. Contrary to the formalist legacy of Modernist and Post-modernist design, SITE's work is an endeavor to include such elements as humor, inversion, ambiguity, fragmentation, and indeterminacy.

To date, SITE has completed six building and two large-scale environmental works, as well as approximately thirty-five theoretical proposals. There have been twelve museum and gallery exhibitions internationally featuring SITE architecture, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum and Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York, the Pompidou Center and Louvre in Paris, the Venice Biennale in Italy, the CAYC Museum in Buenos Aires, the Staatliche Museum in Berlin, an eight museum traveling show in Australia, and an International Communications Agency traveling exhibition to five Eastern European countries.

A retrospective exhibition of SITE will begin at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond in the summer of 1980, to then tour the United States and Europe for three years.

During the past five years, SITE projects have been extensively published in the art, architecture, literary, and popular press of twenty-two countries. Monographs and books on SITE are currently being prepared by Dedalo Libri in Italy and Academy Editions in London.

This exhibition at the Feldman Gallery will be the first comprehensive overview of SITE's drawings and models to be given in the United States.

Enclosed please find brochures describing two of SITE's past projects and photographs of a model of the just completed building in Cutler Ridge, Florida, and two drawings for proposed projects.
