Where We Are Is Always Miles Away, 2005-2006

Ronald Feldman Fine Arts will exhibit Portal from Where We Are Is Always Miles Away, 2005-2006 by Tavares Strachan during The Art Show 2009 (Booth #A23). The work, which measures 12 feet high and 9 feet in diameter, consists of an excavated 3,000-pound, 20-square-foot portion of Crown Street, New Haven, CT, complete with cement, earth, a parking meter, and street signs. The sidewalk was sealed hermetically inside a chamber that preserves the actual 40-degree air from New Haven. Photographic works depict the sidewalk before it was removed and after it was reconstructed.

Also on view, as part of the Dealer's Choice component of The Art Show, will be Hole from Where We Are Is Always Miles Away, a light box with Duratran print, which depicts the hole in the sidewalk after the excavation.

Tavares Strachan was born in the Bahamas. He holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Yale University. His sculptural work, The Distance Between What We Have and What We Want (Arctic Ice Project), a four-and-a-half-ton block of ice from the Arctic Circle, in a specially designed case powered by solar energy, was exhibited by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts and Pierogi Gallery in Miami at the time of Art Basel Miami in December 2006.
